Student Accomodation Site Sponsors Plymouth Students to Swim the Channel

A leading student accommodation site has recently sponsored a team of six students from Plymouth University to take part in a relay swim of the Channel, an event in aid of the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution).

After months of training for the six university friends, who are all keen pool swimmers, they took to the chilly waters of Dover one Saturday morning in September just before 5am to start their challenge. Rachel Bolden, participant and sponsorship organiser of the event, explains that their relay swim worked with each individual swimming continuously for an hour before swapping with another team member. “We just kept taking turns in a set order, an hour each, until we reached France. We were incredibly lucky with our conditions for the swim and we completed it in 11 hours and 59 minutes.”

Financial Support…

Financial support from Accommodation for Students essentially helped the team to pay for the swim; including, boat hire costs and admin fees to the Channel Swimming and Pilot Federation, a Governing body for English Channel Swimming. “We needed money to help us cover some of these costs. Without support we wouldn’t have had the funds to even be able to attempt the swim, so we really owe a lot to Accommodation for Students. We couldn’t have done it without their kind donation.” Says Rachel.

Team Plymouth, as they named themselves, raised around £2,000 for the RNLI.

Director of Accommodation for Students, Simon Thompson, comments: “I was really pleased to hear the news from Rachel that they all completed the swim. It’s an amazing life achievement, and shows great commitment when you think of all the training they had to embark on prior to the event. We would love to be able to support more students in their exciting challenging charity endeavours and will be on the lookout for future interesting opportunities in the coming months.”
