Ten Cities With Geothe-Institut Nairobi Examines Social Practice of Clubbing

The Young Academic School of Music is delighted to be able to bring you news regarding the Ten Cities initiative, being coordinated by the Goethe-Institut Nairobi. This focuses on the global cycle and how the roots of all dance music could well have originated in Africa. With today’s climate not seeing Africa looking to the European scene for their own influences, Ten Cities is looking to fuse a range of different backgrounds to see just how these influences have developed.

Ten cities have obviously been selected, five from Africa and five from Europe.  What’s more around 30 established artists such as Pinch, Vakula and Culoe Du Song will be coming together for a series of five exchanges which involve talks, studio time and collaborative production. As well as this, there will be open events with researchers and photographers and they will be documenting the experience.

Ten cities, two continents, three disciplines…

Ten Cities brings together around fifty DJ’s, producers and musician from Berlin, Bristol, Johannesburg, Cairo, Kiev, Lagos, Lisbon, Luanda, Nairobi and Naples. The concept allows them to be able to produce music together and learn about their differing backgrounds, scenes and influences. At the same time, a research project uses the platform of club cultures to look deeper into the term of the public sphere. There will be 23 researchers present who will work on studies and essays about the more obscure and unknown club scenes and their respective sub cultures. Ten photographers will also look the capture the same knowledge using the lens as opposed to the written word.

At the end of Ten Cities, any new tracks that have been put together will be compiled into full albums and any research will be published through an official conference and a publication. Public sphere and urban space will be examined fully and look to tell the story of club music from the ten cities in question. All photographs will be presented at an exhibition in Berlin and be accompanied by a final concert performance.

Ten Cities: Participating Producers and Musicians

Diamond Version, Gebrüder Teichmann, Jahcoozi, Pinch, Rob Smith, Dirty Paraffin, Vakula, Dubmasta, Batida, Octapush, Wura Damba, Oboyega Oyedele, Djeff, DJ Satellite, Just A Band, Camp Mulla, Marco Messina, Lucio Aquilina and many more

Following the success of the first collaboration in Luanda, Angola back in November 2012, TEN CITIES moved on to the capital city of Nigeria, Lagos at the start of this year, to carry out the most recent recording of the scheme. Hailing from Bristol, England, two innovators of the relatively youthful dubstep scene, Pinch and Rob Smith AKA RSD, made their way to Nigeria to join fellow-European Mother Perera of Berlin’s Jahcoozi in making music with some of Lagos’ finest. Luanda locals Jah Device, Wura Samba and Afro Logic were part of the collaboration, with the interchange culminating in a street jam in Bariga, as well as a larger concert in Nigeria’s Freedom Park.

The project then journeys over to Johannesburg in sunny South Africa from February 18th- March 3rd. Two of Eastern Europe’s rising stars, Ukraine’s Dubmasta and Vakula, are to make the trip to interact with the local pairing of Dirty Paraffin, whilst Hannes Teichmann and Jaoao Orecchia curate the entire soundscape.

The music produced will inevitably be at the forefront of the products of TEN CITIES, with all the tracks produced slated for release as part of a compilation, whilst live performances will be held in all of the cities involved, culminating in a festival in Berlin in 2014. Photography and research regarding the project will also be exhibited in Berlin next year, creating a multimedia experience of the proceedings.
