Young Academic is delighted to announce that the News of the World will not print beyond this Sunday’s edition. Anyone that read last night’s opinion piece on the shocking conduct of the publication will understand how happy we are here at the national student news service. This must surely be seen as a great victory for the liberal press and for the media world in general.

“As News International Chairman James Murdoch has confirmed, this Sunday’s News of the World will be the last ever edition.”

Young Academic has not been the only media outlet to voice concerns over claims that the paper authorised hacking into the mobile phones of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler and the loved ones of the 7/7 bombing victims.

Mr Murdoch has also said that all proceeds from this weekend’s edition will go to worthwhile causes. Downing Street has added that it had no role or involvement in the decision, although connections to David Cameron will have undoubtedly contributed to today’s developments.

In a statement, Mr Murdoch said to employees that the good things the News of the World does (one wonders what he actually alluding to) “have been sullied by behaviour that was wrong – indeed, if recent allegations are true, it was inhuman and has no place in our company”.

One worries whether the actions of News International are simply a preface to the formation of a brand new publication with the same ethos, only time will tell. Whatever happens in the future, we called for the cessation of News of the World and that it what we have got. Crack out the bubbly!
