As promised, the Young Academic commitment to all things music and summer festivals continued in earnest. You may well have seen some great additions to the festival guide this week and we also have some incredible gigs to tell you about for students across the United Kingdom. If you are studying in the Leeds area then you will no doubt be well aware of Canal Mills, the premier multi-arts venue. They have some incredible nights in store this spring and summer as well as a great arts exhibition.
Canal Mills Unveil Eclectic Spring Programme Featuring Maya Jane Coles, SBTRKT, Joy Orbison and Bondax…
Canal Mills has been earning some rave reviews since its launch last September, playing host to some of Europe’s finest DJing talent. As such, they have followed this up with a programme that is sure to whet the appetite of music fans across the country. Anyone studying in and around the Leeds area is urged to get involved with what is becoming somewhat of a dance music phenomenon.
The Easter weekend played host to an incredible range of DJ’s such as Maya Jane Coles, John Talabot and Joy Orbison. These guys provided some of the highlights of the most recent Warehouse Project season and delighted crowds with yet more epic performances.
Still to come at Canal Mills are bass music favourites Metropolis. This is a very special stop from the international 10 Years of Rebel Rave Tour and there is also a night from Manchester’s favourite eccentric tea-party host Mr Scruff – keeping it unreal as usual!
As the relentless winter finally starts to relent, Canal Mills’ intriguing setting with its industrial backdrop, outdoor space and original programming could become one of the year’s dance music highlights.
With the warmer months imminent Canal Mills unique industrial setting, outdoor space and original programming, will no doubt provide a memorable sound, visual and atmospheric experience to all those that grace its floors.
Canal Mills is Also Excited to Announce Its First Permanent Art Installation, From the Much Revered Muralist – Phlegm…
Not only is Canal Mills creating quite a reputation for itself as a music venue, but it is also housing some quite incredible art. Globally acclaimed muralist Phlegm and curators Unit44 will be presenting a much anticipated programme by the name of ‘Unit 44 x Canal Mills Present Phlegm’. This project sees them turn the historic and revered mill into a living visual narrative. They have commissioned the artist to produce this body of work which will be stored in and on the Canal Mills premises indefinitely.
Phlegm, who is an anonymous artist, will be incorporating his distinctive characters into the historic elements of the Canal Mills building. This will lend itself to the theme superbly and all sorts of artists and curators will be invited to work with the project during 2013.
Since its launch in September 2012, Canal Mills has seen huge success. It provides an urban and industrial canvas for arts and music creatives to host events.
“We are so pleased to be working with Unit44 and Phlegm, Canal Mills is evolving in the manner we intended and this is just the next step to create a truly multi-arts venue and influential space for Leeds and beyond.” Says Dan Blackledge, Director of Canal Mills.
