Motor retailer Lookers has enjoyed success by winning the North East regional final of the National Apprenticeship Awards 2017.

The brand was shortlisted in the Macro category, which is sponsored by The Open University, for their commitment to recruiting and developing young talent through apprenticeships. In 2017, Lookers has added over 160 technical apprentices to their team, in addition to the 78 they welcomed in 2016.

The new recruits have helped Lookers continue to offer the very best repair and maintenance support to their customers. Defying gender stereotypes, Lookers is working to develop a female-focused technical apprenticeship, helping to create a more diverse workforce.

Lookers boast 31 franchise brands across 157 motor retail outlets. In the North East alone, the brand has 17 dealerships and a regional head office located in Newcastle.

Matthew Clay, Lookers’ Group Qualifications Manager, said: “We’re very proud to win the North East regional final of the National Apprenticeship Awards 2017. We’ve put a lot of work into our programme and are already seeing positive results right across the business. We believe that creating young, skilled technicians through the apprenticeship programme is vital, not just for our business, but for the future of the motor industry.

“This award is a fantastic pat on the back and will make us more determined to develop our programme into an even greater success.”

The National Apprenticeship Awards are now in their fourteenth year and were established to recognise outstanding achievement across two key areas: the businesses that are supporting young talent through apprenticeships and the apprentices themselves who are making significant contributions to businesses.

Winners from each of the six regional awards ceremonies will be entered for national judging. The three strongest entries from each category will be selected as national finalists, while the very best employer category entries will be in the running to feature in the prestigious Centrica sponsored Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers list 2017.

All of the winners and the Top 100 Employers will be announced at the national awards ceremony on January 18th, 2018.
