The University of Luxembourg continues to expand the courses of study it offers in the natural sciences. As of the 2014-2015 winter semester, three master’s programmes in engineering sciences will commence at the same time.
They are directed at future construction engineers, mechanical engineers and business engineers. The three full-time courses of study last two years each and all of them feature innovative academic approaches.
Thus the Master of Science in Civil Engineering – Megastructure Engineering with Sustainable Resources seeks primarily to educate experts for major construction projects like high-risers and bridges and to do so with special emphasis put on reserves of materials and energy that are becoming ever scarcer. Students are to be qualified as broadly as possible as thus capable of scanning the full breadth of mega-projects. In mechanical engineering, the English-language Master of Science in Engineering – Sustainable Product Creation aims to impart a deep understanding of the entire product creation chain to students, from design via production and up through recycling. Graduates should be able to solve multifaceted problems completely and to have a keen sensitivity to environmental issues, a profile that is sought after in many companies. How the energy designs of large buildings with their energy and heat consumption can be optimised and financed is one of the guiding issues of the Master of Science in Engineering – Energy and Economic Efficiency (Master professionnel en Sciences de l’Ingénieur – Efficacité énergétique et économique), which is conducted in French and English. This interdisciplinary course of studies combines engineering with business administration know-how and trains industrial engineers. The master’s is based on cooperation with the University of Lorraine in Nancy, where the third semester is conducted. As external partner institutions the university has been able to recruit Siemens, Bosch, Paul Wurth and the European Investment Bank which will be offering various practice-oriented seminars and lectures from their core field of competency.
All three courses of study will be able to offer contacts to industry in the form of internships or company-related master’s dissertations. The multilingual University of Luxembourg is additionally known for taking care of its students personally in small learning groups and for having an international environment. The registration fee amounts to €200 per semester for each course.
“The demand for a complete engineering education in Luxembourg is rising on both sides: both from our approximately 300 bachelor’s engineering students as well as from industry, with which we cultivate a very close partnership,” is how Professor Eric Tschirhart, the university’s vice-president for academic affairs, explained the university’s investment in the new master’s courses. With the 90-person strong research unit in engineering sciences on the Kirchberg campus, the university additionally has a highly qualified international team of professors and correspondingly technical equipment.
