City College Welcomes World-Famous Design Qualification
From September 2015 City College Southampton will be the only college in Hampshire to offer the prestigious University of the Arts London (UAL) Awarding Body level 3 qualification in graphics and illustration.

The diploma has been added to City College’s expanding art and design provision following increased demand for skilled young people in the creative industries. According to latest government statistics, the creative industries are worth over £71bn a year and form one of the country’s fastest-growing sectors.
The two-year course, created in partnership with local graphic design firms, will give students the skills they need to get straight into work or further their studies with higher education qualifications.

Jane Gamson, art and design learning manager at City College Southampton, said: “This is a great accolade for the college and highlights our specialism in the growing field of creative arts.

“UAL is a highly respected awarding body and it’s fantastic that we can now offer our students its exceptional qualifications, which are widely recognised as the elite accreditation for the creative learner. Our students will now have even more of a competitive edge when applying for jobs or higher education courses.”

Local employers have welcomed the introduction of the course. Ed Gould, creative director at local marketing communications agency Carswell Gould, said: “It is imperative that we nurture and foster emerging creative talent in Southampton, especially given the ever-expanding size of the industry. In order to compete with cities like Bristol, Brighton and London, businesses and education must work together to ensure young people have the skills they need. The launch of this new course is a positive step for Southampton.”

The first year of the diploma will see students working to a client brief, developing their skills in a flexible and encouraging environment. Although drawing is at the heart of the course, students with also work with a mix of other mediums including printmaking, digital media, photography and 3D imaging.
For their final project students will have the opportunity to create their own brief, tailored to their interests and strengths, and will have the chance to exhibit their finished work to the public, for the world to see.

UAL Awarding Body is part of the University of the Arts London, Europe’s largest specialist arts university made up of six distinctive and distinguished colleges, including Central Saint Martins.

It is the only specialist art, design and creative industries awarding organisation in England and is committed to improving the standards of art, design and creative education and does so by working with further education institutions with the same vision.
