As the UK’s national student news website and the ultimate source of festival news, previews and interviews, Young Academic can bring you a comprehensive preview of this summer’s number one music festival – Bestival.
As everyone here at Young Academic HQ prepares for what we are sure is going to be the absolute highlight of the summer as far as mammoth line-ups and unique entertainment is concerned, we have decided to give you guys this follow up to our Bestival preview and also an extremely useful festival survival guide from our Fashion Editor, Rachel Deer. Enjoy!
First of all though, let’s get down to some of the awesome additions to the Bestival 2012 line up as well as a final lowdown of every major artist playing at the event.
Radio One living legend Zane Lowe has just confirmed that he will be gracing the shores of the Isle of Wight with his presence this September along with Beardyman, meaning that the organisers are urging students to grab the last of the tickets before it is too late. Bestival is little more than two weeks away and the last few tickets are vanishing quickly…

THIS YEAR’S VERY SPECIAL GUEST: HOWARD MARKS
With all of the above, the excitement for this year’s Bestival really is reaching fever pitch in the Bestival bunker with things now up and running at Robin Hill Country Park as our 2012 site comes alive with the first structures taking shape!
Fesitval curator Rob da Bank had the following to say; “Well, we’re nearly there folks. Three weeks to go and already Robin Hill and Combley Farm are buzzing with diggers, lorries, fence builders, set makers and arty type people wandering about with pencils waving at imaginary structures. I’m very, very excited. In other news we have some amazing latest and, quite possibly last, additions to the line-up. Zane Lowe and Beardyman have both grown up with Bestival having played nearly every one and most of the stages. I’m honoured to have them both back. JJ Doom is one of the most exciting collaborations in recent years for hip-hop and we have the amazing Valerie June who’s gonna knock your socks off and King Charles who has been one of my ones to watch for a few years now. Finally he’s coming to Bestival! Hope you are too… The last tickets are about to go!”
Following the very sad news that Frank Ocean will be unable to play at this year’s Bestival, Beardyman has very kindly stepped in – every cloud and all that hey! Beardyman is one of the most exciting live acts in the UK, as anyone that has been lucky to see him will know. Young Academic has been able to see this fella at a host of UK venues and festivals and everyone is in for a real treat we can tell you!
In true Bestival style, none other than the one and only Howard Marks will be heading across to the Solent once again. This has become somewhat of a festival tradition and we know that the organisers are ecstatic that he will once again be joining everyone for the party.
So, with all this and so much more, we are extremely excited here at Young Academic for what is going to be a totally intriguing party. Don’t forget your wildlife costumes either folks as dressing up the Saturday is obligatory – if you see some drunked turtles or deers then come and say hi! And, if you haven’t bought your tickets then pull your fingers out before you miss the boat!

As September draws ever closer, festival-goers prepare for what is arguably the biggest UK festival of 2012 (for those looking for more than music from the Top 40s at least). The festival has grown from strength to strength and emerged as one of the quirkiest around. Promising fun and frolics, this festival offers more than just music. Brave a night’s stay in the haunted Hotel Slumbarave, go for afternoon tea in the Time for Tease, skate the night away at the roller disco and let us not forget the fancy dress party which will take over on the Saturday.
The diversity of music and events that makes Bestival a favourite with the fans is what lures in so many year after year. For Young Academic, the #wildlife themed festival will be a first and boy, are we excited to feast our eyes on what the organisers have done to decorate the island.
We expect every nook and cranny to be adorned with wildlife themed décor. The same goes for the fans who will make their way to the island on the first Thursday and Friday of September, rucksacks jam packed with furry tails and pointy ears.
Fancy dress is a must when it comes to what to pack but what else should young festival-goers be packing in their essentials?
First, the obvious:
- Tickets. Festival tickets, train tickets, ferry tickets, shuttle tickets – there will be someone that leaves something behind!
- Cash. There will be cash machines onsite but if you want to save your pennies for the food, booze and other entertainment, we advise you to take it with you as festival cash machines tend to charge!
- Raincoat. We’ve not had the sunniest of summers to say the least; I think this one goes without saying.
- Wellies. Fields, rain, mud and thousands of festival goers. Need we say more?
- Sunglasses. Here’s hoping. They will be useful, even if it is only to hide bags under eyes after a heavy night in the Magic Meadow.
- Clothes. Obviously. We’re talking straw hats, denim hot pants, knee length socks, baggy tees and lots and lots of jumpers (we’ve heard it gets chilly at night).
- Tent. (Even if you don’t plan to sleep.)
- Sleeping Bag.
- Torch. Phone. Camera. We want to see lots of photos on your return.
- Toothbrush. Toothpaste. Dry Shampoo. Hair Brush. Towel. Deodorant. Wet Wipes (lots and lots of wet wipes). Toilet Roll. Paracetamol and Berocca (to cure the hangover).
And here’s a few things we have found and think everyone else should know about:
We all know just how bad the portable loos get after just one day of alcohol, burgers and God knows what else so be prepared with the Public Toilet Survival Kit complete with antiseptic wipes, disposable gloves and even a toilet cover – all for just three quid.
An absolute must for anyone thinking of drinking whilst away: don’t get caught without a glass when you’re desperate for a hair of the dog. The Pop Up Pint Glass will slide into your rucksack, ready to be pulled out when you need it most.
Whilst you are at it, keep your favourite tipple safe and on hand in a hip flask, the more playfully designed the better. Urban Outfitters have a fine array just waiting to be put in your Bestival bag. Remember though, that drinking your own alcohol is only allowed in the camping area.
Last but not least, get creative with your fancy dress costume. Bestival loves fancy dress. Just get on Twitter and search #wildlife to see for yourself just how excited people are getting. Think peacock feathers and colourful headdresses. Bestival-goers love headdresses. Guide by Young Academic Fashion Editor and Photographer, Rachel Deer.
